A Long Weekend in Dubai
If you love the finer things, then a trip to Dubai is a must. Almost everything in the desert city is built for those who love the life of luxury, meaning it’s brimming with designer stores, fast cars, and opulent hotels and bars. A weekend away here is like entering another world, and the fact the city doesn’t just survive in harsh conditions but thrives showcases just what an excellent destination it has become. If you’re headed here on a holiday and want some inspiration, then check out our guide to a long weekend in Dubai!
Friday
The scorching desert air hits you as you step out of your air-conditioned taxi, but it’s only a short stroll to the entrance of the stunning Hyatt Regency Dubai Creek, where you’re staying for the next two nights. Once you’re inside it isn’t just the temperature control systems that make you feel like you’ve entered an oasis, but also the beautiful greenery decorating the entrance that belies the sand and sun outside.
Your room is fitted with all the comforts you could want and more, and it’s tempting to luxuriate in everything the hotel has to offer. However, you’re only here for a short time, so you have to make the most of it.
The first attraction you visit isn’t an architectural marvel or a retail paradise, but the Dubai Miracle Garden. Officially the world’s largest flower garden, it contains over 50 million kinds of flowers and more than 200 million species of plant – so plenty of flora to get lost in.
Once you’ve taken in the glorious greenery, you head to the famous Palm Islands. This man-made collection of islets are grouped together to resemble the tree they’re named for, and are home to plenty of attractions that are well worth visiting. However, you’re keen to continue the nature theme of your morning and head to Sea Lion Point, where you can get up close and personal with the playful creatures in a safe environment.
After a busy morning you head to your table at the stunning CE LA VI. The rooftop bar serves up delectable pan-Asian cuisine alongside sparkling city views. Although what you can see from your table is stunning, the food is just as impressive to look at, and even more so to taste. You’ve paired it with a crisp glass of wine, too, making the meal a real indulgence.
After your meal, you head to the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, where you’re enamoured by the creatures of the deep. Then, to reward yourself for a morning and early afternoon of natural highlights, you head to the world-famous Dubai Mall for some retail therapy.
You shop until you’re about to drop, and soon it’s time for dinner. You pass by the hotel to drop off your haul, before zooming straight to the wonderful Bagatelle. Here, you’re treated to some of the best French cuisine outside of the country, as well as live music and lip-smacking cocktails. As the night wears on, the venue is transformed into a place to dance your heart out, which you do until the 3am closing time.
Saturday
You can’t visit Dubai without heading up the Burj Khalifa, which is exactly where you end up after a quick but tasty breakfast at the hotel. The view from the world’s tallest building is unbelievable, and even though you take a few snaps, none do it justice.
You head back down to earth and continue your tour of amazing architecture by hailing a cab to the beautiful Jumeirah Mosque. You get there just in time for the guided tour at 10am, and you’re treated to an enlightening experience by the excellent guides. Afterwards, you spend a bit of time just wandering around the building and marvelling at its beauty.
Lunch is special today because you’re at the starred 11 Woodfire. Situated in an old villa, the cuisine is modern and global, all linked together by the theme of fire. With stunning options for all dietary requirements, there’s something for everyone here, and the quality that runs through the dishes is clear to see. The restaurant itself is dry, but the food and non-alcoholic drinks are so good that you don’t even notice.
After your sumptuous meal, you head to the famous historic Al Fahidi district. Built in the 18th century, this neighbourhood offers a classic but still impressive alternative to the skyscrapers that dominate the city. You top off this enriching experience with a visit to the Dubai Museum at Al Fahidi Fort, where you get an overview of how the people of this land lived before it became a playground for the world’s wealthiest.
Your evening meal tonight is at the unparalleled Billionaire. Delicious dinner comes with a delectable show, and you’re not sure what to be more impressed by. The drinks flow freely here too, and although you could easily see yourself staying until the venue closes, you reserved a table via our nightlife concierge service at one of Dubai’s most exclusive nightclubs: 1Oak.
The Arabic outpost of this New York institution maintains the glamour of the original, but almost everything is super-sized to fit the Dubai aesthetic. The service is impeccable, as are the classy crowd, who are already making the most of the DJ’s skills on the dance floor when you arrive. You’re quick to join them, and between grooving to big hits and heading back to your table for some refreshments, the time flies by. Soon it’s the end of the night, and you’re on your way back to your room for one last sleep in this incredible city.
Sunday
You take it easy on Sunday morning with a visit to the famous Dubai Fountain, followed by a meander through the Gold Souk. After being tantalised by all the shiny treasures, you’re ready for lunch, and you’re ending on a high. This is because you have a table at the 2-star Tresind.
Serving Indian food at its very finest, the dishes here make you wish you could buy out the chef’s contract and bring them home with you. Alas, it’s just souvenirs in your suitcase as you head to the airport for your flight home. But there’s always next time.
